SSS Champoussin

Private telemark lessons

Private telemark lessons at the Swiss Ski School of Champoussin allow you to practice, whatever your level (beginner, intermediate or advanced) this technique invented by the Norwegian Sondre Norheim in 1868.

The particularity of this downhill Nordic skiing technique coming from Telemark County in Norway, is that the heel of the boot is not attached to the ski.

Its apparent simplicity is deceptive. The practice of this sport requires a few years of experience with traditional skiing and balance in order to progress more quickly. Changes of direction require a push and a change of step.

Taking advantage of a renewed interest in the 1970s, telemark skiing developed in the United States and then rapidly in the rest of the world where skiing is practiced.

The SSS and its experienced instructors offer to initiate or perfect you to this sliding discipline coming from the Norwegian Great North. Elegance, freedom and dynamism are the key words of telemark skiing.

  • Priority on the Portes du Soleil ski lifts
  • A video correction is possible to improve your technique (some private lessons are required for this purpose)

THE EQUIPMENT TO PRACTICE TELEMARK

SKI BOTTOMS

More flexible than those used in downhill skiing, telemark boots are equipped with a beak at the front allowing the fixation on the skis. The choice of the leather shell (less used nowadays, but more flexible and comfortable for touring) or soft plastic shell (more security and ease for sport) will depend on your use.

THE SKIS

The practice of telemark skiing requires dedicated slats (even if you can mount bindings on the alpine skis. Several models exist for different practices: piste, off-piste, powder, carving, 4×4 mats, twintips. For example, the fat model (a trend from 2000 to 2005) is wide and adapted to virgin snow and backcountry.

THE FIXINGS

There are several types of fasteners (jaw, spike or cable) available with disadvantages and advantages. Some systems offer plates to replace the cables and offer different stress reinforcements.

The current trend among manufacturers is towards mixed bindings and footwear in order to combine the pleasure of telemarking with that of hiking.

THE STICKS

Originally, the alpenstock, a stick of about 2 meters was used. Now the choice of length will depend on the telemark discipline chosen (skating, for example, is practiced with longer poles). The use of poles is not essential, depending on the discipline practiced (telesurfing or carving for example).

TELEMARK-RELATED ACTIVITIES

Telemark skiing is usually practiced in competition, but the modernization of equipment, the advent of ski touring and the desire to “do something else” of skiers and snowboarders are helping to popularize this multifaceted sport.

SOME EXAMPLES OF COMPETITION DISCIPLINES

CLASSIC SPRINT

Combining giant slalom (with jumping during the course) and Nordic skiing at the end of the course, the Classic Sprint is held in 2 runs of 1 minute each. The transition between the “giant slalom” and “skating” part is made by a Loom (360° turn).

CLASSIC

The classic Telemark takes up the principles of the classic Sprint and can offer 2 Looms, 2 jumps and 2 skatings. It takes place over a single run of 3 to 4 minutes.

PARALLEL SPRINT

The Parallel Sprint is a recent (2011) and spectacular discipline. Two athletes compete in a giant slalom of 11 to 17 gates, a jump (distance and style count for the final score), a Loom and a skating final (the length of the latter depends on the penalties received upstream of the course).

TEAM PARALLEL SPRINT

The rules for the Team Parallel Sprint are identical to the Parallel Sprint. Teams are composed of one woman and two men.
